Steel, gloss paint and gloss paint on paper, 2000

This project consists of a large-scale sculptural piece as well as a series of works on paper. The project re-configures the coastline of England to form a new uncanny island, which is both strange and familiar. Metamorphosing the familiar shape of the island of England into an unsettling and ambiguous form. The viewer engages with the pieces through the act of recognition, as familiar lines of coast come into focus. This is then undermined by passages that resist identification, upsetting the recognition process.

Pieces from this series have been shown at Fa1 contemporary art, London and at Vane, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, several of the drawings reside in private collections. Click here for press release & here for review.
