Break of Day

DVD,60mins, 2002

This video work was made in central London in the early hours of the morning as the city is waking up and starting to go to work.

It shows a landscape almost in silhouette against a sky that seems to be in-between night and day. The camera shot is unsteady though, and every now and then the viewer gets glimpses of an edge to the image and sometimes the corner of a red car in the foreground.

The video was made by standing across the road from an advertising hoarding and trying to focus in on the landscape in the background of the advertisement, whilst attempting to keep the image steady and in shot over a long period of time - an endeavour which is constantly frustrated by the inability of the artist to hold the camera steady and by passing traffic getting in between the camera and the landscape.

The image created is that of looking over the horizon towards another place. This longing for a peaceful natural landscape is constantly contradicted by the conditions of the urban environment in which the piece is filmed.
